A Day in the Garden

Spring has sprung!  There's no doubt about it. It's late March and the daffodils are in full bloom - hooray!

Before our Easter break we are spending a week in the garden preparing the flower beds and vegetables patches, and also sowing some seeds to grow inside until the weather becomes warmer.

We started our official mini-vegetable patch two years ago after my Father died in 2013.  He had planned to concentrate on growing fruit and vegetables in his retirement but he died three months before he planned to retire. I still feel pretty devastated about the whole thing and I suppose this is a way to mourn and honour his memory. Rest in peace, Daddy.

We also turned over the strawberry patch and weeded the flower beds.

Panda Girl did a super job preparing the raspberry patch.

After lunch The Boy planted mini-sunflower seeds.

And we sowed 25 courgette seeds, 5 cucumber seeds and 8 calandrinia seeds.

Then Trampolining lessons, a Science lesson with Papa and Cadets for the two eldest.

The children have had fun this week designing coloured circles to put on a spinning top, resulting in some awesome colour mixes.

Exploration

This week we completed a fun fortnight on exploration from the ancient civilisations to the most recent ocean exploration.

After completing our day on James Cook...

...we spent a morning on David Livingstone.  What a kind-hearted man he was!

We briefly covered Arctic and Antarctic exploration...

...blue for the Arctic which is actually just sea ice and green for Antarctica which is a land mass.

Moving on to ocean exploration, we talked a little about underwater volcanoes...

...and had a science morning making convection currents with hot water and ice cold water lowered into room temperature water.

The hot water rose to the top.

The ice cold water stayed in its container at the bottom.

Experimenters.

We concluded with a morning of various types of fun explorer work, consolidating our two weeks of study on the subject.

The Boy did these cute puzzles.

And made a cute ship.

The girls performed a play about Christopher Columbus, starring King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, as well as some crew and a few Native Americans.

The Boy made a treasure map.

As did Panda Girl

...while Ballet Girl and Monkey Girl read through summaries of Tudor explorers' journeys...

...and located them on our whiteboard map.
