A Mish-Mash of Winter, Part 1

Advent is one of my favourite, yet one of my busiest times of the year. I decided on a project that would encompass all sorts of interesting, cross-curricular themes that we could dip in and out of while we join in with birthdays (Nanny's and Panda Girl's) and Christmas parties with friends, and skirt around the builders building our new kitchen.

We made a Lapbook About Wolves.

Meerkat Sweets Jar, in Scandinavian style for our meerkat-loving neighbour.

Advent Colours

Pink - Joy

Purple -Repentance

White - Purity

We made boxes for each colour, using exact measurements for each net shape.

We made Scandinavian Christmas Decorations to hang in our neighbour's tree as a surprise

Workbooks

The kiddies learnt how to make Yummy Roast Potatoes cooked in goose fat, to accompany our chicken casserole.

Learning abou the Tradition of the Yule Log from its Viking origins - to its 12 Days of Christmas burning in the huge fires in medieval great halls - to its 12 hour burning when private chambers and smaller fireplaces became the norm during Tudor times, to its deline today when we just eat cake versions!

We decorated them as per medieval tradition and Aunty G is going to burn them for us in her huge fireplace!

A Lapbook About Russia

Armistice. Commemorating 100 Years Since the End of WWI

We commemorated Armistce with a week long project. We visited our local memorial and copied the names of all those from our village who gave their lives in World War I and World War II; we researched poems written by soldiers, loved ones and by our own lovely Monkey Girl; we looked at the animals who helped during both wars, we thanked and prayed for our own lovely family members who particiaped in the Wars and we learnt about the white poppy representing peace. 

My Cadet children and my Detachment Commander husband marched for the fallen.

In her role as The Lord Lietenant's Cadet, Ballet Girl accompanied the County Depty Lord Lieutenant to lay a wreath at the local Cenotaph.

And she assisted in the lighting of the Peace Beacon in the evening. I am incredibly proud of her and of all my children in their roles. I hope my grandparents and great-grandparents would feel the same.

My Boy and I went on a Peace Walk for reflection and to fulfill a promise to our grandparents that we will learn from mistakes of war.
