Our last week of our thematic unit saw us in the woods! These woods are fairly local to us and are a confirmed Site of Special Scientific Interest. We were on the lookout for Butcher's Broom which was used to clear and clean butcher's boards as the leaves are both strong, like holly, and antiseptic;
and also for Wood Anemone which spreads 6 feet a century! So a definite sign of Ancient woodland.
The Boy experimented with differences ways to measure the height and circumferences of trees. We also found cuckoo spit, a badger sett, lots of fungi, a googly eye! and we listened for birdsong.
Sunbaby made a bird feeder with seeds and a pear. 
She also made a fairy garden using soil from a mole hill...
... investigated poppies...
...made stuff...
...made a nest and some baby birds...
...wrote letters in salt...
Sunbaby made her own rock pool.
...practised her pen holding...
...worked super hard on all her work...
...And made a picnic for the birds.
Sunbaby finished all her work. 
And the Boy learnt about estuaries, mudflats, the term, 'biodiversity', brackish water and rock pool zones.
The Boy made a cave and learnt about the three zones of a cave: The twilight zone, transition zone and deep zone.

And learnt how to make play dough...
...And flapjacks.
The Boy has been working through his maths books. 
And Panda Girl's books arrived for her four year US High School Diploma! So Sunbaby has officially finished her first thematic unit with me and Panda Girl has officially finished her last thematic unit with me!
