I thought it would be fun to do a project on all things adventure, Bear Grylls, speed and motion, what defines a hero etc. It became pretty diverse, but any practical adventures became a no-go when The Boy's asthma flared up pretty badly for a fortnight. Here's what we got up to:
The Boy learnt Invictus, the story behind the author and the meaning behind the words.
Bear Grylls is a real dude in our house! We have his books, we watch his programmes and we to aspire to his positivity goals and 'never give up' attitude'.
We started with these two books.
And Sunbaby went camping under the table.
A 'fire' for Sunbaby
The Boy studied mountain ranges of the world
and the world's oceans while Sunbaby did some lovely work on camping. Here she is counting and pegging numbers, matching and graphing.
Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hilary
Divali happened during our studies so Sunbaby took a tangent and worked on Divali vocabulary.
With spectacular timing our neighbours brought round some Divali food so we got to try out the treats we spotted in the book.
Stunt paper aeroplane flights: working out speed in metres per second.
He began reading Bear Grylls' Soul Fuel book: just a really gorgeous book full of inspiration.
Working through forces and motion.
A fox hibernating
Winter sport clothes
A treasure hunt for The Boy (with a helping hand from Sunbaby).
End of the treasure hunt: a new skateboard :)
So Sunbaby carried on inside...
And The Boy worked off some energy outside.
Winter sports and winter Olympics for Sunbaby, and Hannah Cockroft (Paralympic star) for The Boy.
We read the story of The Pilgrim Fathers on The Mayflower and The Boy made The Mayflower out of bread.
Firework counting
Firework shapes
Sunbaby's magnificent rocket
Firework maths
The Boy completed a Bonfire Night code cracking mystery.
Firework art
Enjoying Bear Grylls on YouTube
A fun morning of Mountain Rescue teamwork
Computer programming with Kahn Academy
Studying the lives of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Raheem Sterling, Nelson Mandela and Marcus Rashford
Soul Fuel
Sunbaby made rock cakes and The Boy made a model of Bear Grylls with a 3D pen.
Sunbaby made an afternoon snack display of Bear Grylls zip lining magestically across some rocks (cakes).
Time to try some Bear Grylls snacks - roasted crickets!
Chewbacca wasn't keen but couldn't stop eating them.
Yeah, no thanks.
No. I prefer, like, anything else.
Even a big sister came to try.
Making one of Bear Grylls' recipes
Complete with 3D Bear Grylls
White water rafting
Reading the true story of two adventurers rowing across the Indian Ocean.
Salt Dough Christmas decorations ready for our Advent project, coming next.
Code cracking
Making a Salt Dough assault course with the assistance of Bear Grylls in the background.
He made a cool animation to demo it.
Topography. We worked out the height above sea level for all our indirect family.
Knots
The Boy loved this book. He read the whole thing in two days.
Designing a surfboard and learning the terms for each part.
Surfing vocabulary
Some great books we used for our project
The Boy made a Canadian wilderness log cabin.
And Sunbaby ate a lot of the ingredients as she went along while she made some Hey Dugee cupcakes :)
The Boy also wrote an adventure story, learnt about balanced and unbalanced forces, designed an earthquake proof building, studied the Olympic journeys of South African surfers, Bianca Buitendag and Jordy Smith, completed a paper helicopter investigation, made a Bear Grylls lapbook, and discussed the characteristics of a modern day hero.
The Boy's asthma eventually settled, but not before we needed to see the paramedics. Onwards to spring, my Boy!
