Viking Place Names

Evidence of the Viking invasion and eventual settlement along the east coast of Britain can still be seen today in place names throughout these regions.

We learnt that place names ending in:
 thorpe = outlying farm
by = farm
beck = stream
dale = valley
thwaite = clearing
ness = headland
wick = harbour
holm = island

The girls found hundreds of these viking place names all over maps of Britain.

We also researched viking words that are still in use today. There are some brilliant ones:

freckles
happy
ugly
awkward
fellow
wand
glitter
wing
husband
egg
